Founding date: 1948

Former name: National Water Well Association (changed in 1991)

Mission: The mission of the National Ground Water Association is to provide professional and technical leadership in the advancement of the ground water industry and in the protection, the promotion, and the responsible development and use of ground water resources. In support of this mission, we are committed to: Serving as an international education and information resource; serving as a communication link for our diverse membership to allow them to address their unique needs and the issues facing the ground water industry; and serving the people and the organizations who produce, study, utilize, remediate, market, protect, or manage ground water or related products and services.

Description of membership: 4 membership divisions - contractors; scientists and engineers; manufacturers; wholesale distributors.

Benefits: NGWA is the industry leader in continuing professional education, offering short courses and workshops throughout the nation. Offers catalog of books and other educational materials. Conducts annual trade shows. Provides discounts on insurance products, long distance phone, rental cars, and similar services.

Number of members: 16,000

Board: The National Board has 16 voting members; 3 observers. Each division has an oversight board. The Board of Delegates from the general membership modifies the bylaws. The divisions and their boards are:

Affiliated organizations: Affiliates in 48 states and one foreign country.

International Cooperative Agreements: Agreements with the Australian Drilling Industry Association, Associacao Brasileira de Aguas Subterraneas (Brazilian Ground Water Association) and the Canadian Ground Water Association.

Memberships: NGWA is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives, the Geoenvironmental Forum, and is officially recognized by the United Nations as a non-government organization.

Certifications: Voluntary certification programs in well construction and pump installation [CWD, CPI, CWD/PI, MGWC], as well as for ground water professionals (scientists and engineers) [CGWP].

Information Services: Operates the National Ground Water Information Center, the largest non-governmental clearinghouse on ground water science and well technology in the world. Holds more than 40,000 volumes. Ground Water On-Line(TM), a nearly 80,000 citation bibliographic data base of ground water literature is available at no cost to NGWA members through the Association's World Wide Web site. NGWA also publishes the Ground Water Bookstore Catalog, a mail order service for publications, videos, slides and other materials related to ground water science and well technology.

Programs: Conducts annual Darcy Hydrogeology Lecture series at universities and colleges around the world. Sponsors awards at International Science and Engineering Fair; scholarships and fellowships; Theis Hydrogeology Conference; annual Petroleum Hydrocarbons Conference and Exposition with the American Petroleum Institute; annual National Ground Water Exposition; regional trade expositions management. Conducts approximately 30 educational short courses annually. Has a federal government affairs lobbyist.

Publications: Water Well Journal - monthly trade (accepts display advertising); Ground Water - bimonthly academic (educational, employment, and professional card advertising only); Ground Water Monitoring & Remediation - quarterly technical (accepts display advertising, ). All produced by for-profit subsidiary - Ground Water Publishing Company. Newsletters of NGWA include Well Log (incorporated in Water Well Journal); Newsletter of the Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers; Tailgate Talk (safety issues); Washington Water Fax (federal government affairs); and Standards Update (standards activities related to the ground water industry).

Scholarships: NGWA Auxiliary - number granted varies but annual amount awarded typically does not exceed $2,000 - limited to undergraduate women; API/NGWA - number granted varies but annual amount awarded typically does not exceed $10,000.
