The Well Log:
An NGWA Member Benefit
The Well Log carries items of interest for NGWA's Contractors, Manufacturers, and Suppliers divisions. The following is a sampling of membership news contained in a recent four-page newsletter.
NGWA Introduces Fax-on-Demand
NGWA's Fax-on-Demand System is up and running. This service enables the caller to receive information on more than 50 NGWA activities, services, and products and it costs the caller nothing. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is available to anyone with a touch tone telephone and access to a fax machine. It is simple to operate and friendly prompters take you, step by step, through the process.
First you call (888) 440-NGWA (6492); international callers should dial (202) 274-4506 (this is not a free service for international callers). You probably won't know the index number of the item you want so you'll want to start by requesting the index. It will be faxed to you. Once you decide which information you want, using the same toll-free number, call back and enter the index number(s). The information you seek will be faxed to you in minutes -- even if it's 3 a.m!
Members Urged to Take Active NGWA Role
Past President John Schmitt, CWD/PI, invites all members to take an active role in their Association. In particular Schmitt, who is chairman of the Nominating Committee, is seeking contractors to stand for election to NGWA's Board of Directors.
In addition, NGWA needs a host of volunteers to fill committee and task force seats. If you, or someone you know, is committed to serving the Association, contact NGWA's Membership Department today, (800) 551-7379, and ask for the NGWA Board of Directors Nominee form or the NGWA Willingness to Serve form.
Membership Campaign Now in Full Swing
Every NGWA member who successfully recruits one new member for any of the four divisions will receive the NGWA Service for Success lapel pin and be recognized in the Well Log. For every three new members recruited, NGWA enters your name in a special drawing. The more new members you recruit, the greater your chances of winning an L.L Bean denim shirt with the NGWA logo embroidered on it in white, $50 in Hertz rental certificates, or a sun-filled cruise for two.
To participate in the campaign, simply recruit a new member (a new member is defined as any person who has not been an active member of NGWA since May 1996). Make sure you are identified as the Recruiter in the space provided on the NGWA membership application form, see page 00. Applications and membership fee payment must be received at NGWA, Department 1841, Columbus, OH 43271 on or before October 31, 1997.
For additional information, contact the NGWA Membership Department at (800) 551-7379.
Restrictions apply to travel dates, originating must be within the U.S., and booked through NGWA's affiliation with Wagon-lits Travel USA, Columbus, Ohio. Not refundable or transferable
NGWA in Washington

The Dutko Group
Water 2000 Activity Level Is High
We in Washington have seen a high level of activity concerning the important issue of community water system funding (Water 2000). Working through the Appropriations Committee staff, NGWA has pressed the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service (RUS) for evidence that the agency is complying with the 1996 Farm bill provisions requiring open meetings and notification prior to water system preapplication filing. You will recall that NGWA advocated this new Farm bill requirement so ground water industry members could provide meaningful public input prior to decisions being made to fund long pipe community water systems. Appropriations Committee staff planned, during a March 13 hearing, to question Agriculture Department representatives as to their inaction on this legislative requirement to date.
The Dutko Group (TDG) has been updating Appropriations Committee staff on the industry's progress in gathering case studies showing where government funded community water systems have gone into areas that could have been more cost effectively served by private wells. The Congressional Committee requested these case studies during a November 1996 meeting with NGWA and RUS representatives. TDG explained to Committee staff that the process has taken longer than anticipated, but preliminary information on two case studies was to be available for the committee during the March hearings. Congressional Committee staff and members are also interested in a personal briefing by NGWA representatives once the full technical report on these case studies is complete.
Expo and Events Information
Register Now for National Convention and Save $$$In case you haven't noticed, the theme of this year's national convention is "See You in September." There's a line in this decades-old teen hit that says "there's danger in the summer moon" and that lyric may be applied to the upcoming June 30 deadline for express registration fees. If you register by June 30, you'll only pay $55 (nonmembers have to pay $110). The next day you'll pay $75 and nonmembers will pay $150.
The 1997 national convention will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center on September 3-6. Headquarters hotel is the Las Vegas Hilton.
