Join One of Our Volunteer Committees Role of Committees
Leaders of the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) committees have determined that volunteers want committee operations:
1) to be purposeful
2) to provide policy direction in moving NGWA forward
3) to advise the Board of Directors
4) to be selective in appointing members according to their expertise and interest
5) to be in conjunction with the overall strategies of the Association.
Volunteer Attributes
Traits and attributes of effective committee members include: expertise relevant to the committee's purpose; willingness to further NGWA's goals; commitment to time required to make NGWA a top priority; attendance at scheduled meetings and at the programs with which your committee is involved; and a positive attitude.
Committee Duties
Issues addressed by committees and subcommittees changes from time to time, but generally they are working on assignments from the National Board of Directors, or are responding to industry conditions or anticipated industry changes. Expenses are reimbursed, per the policy approved by the Board of Directors, only for special meetings authorized by the President.
Length of Commitment
The committee year runs from convention to convention. A term is three committee years and you may serve two consecutive terms. Chairs serve for one year of their committee term, but may be reappointed to a second one-year term as chair. The NGWA President is responsible for appointments of all committee leadership positions. Individuals are not automatically appointed to any leadership position. The President seeks to appoint representatives from all divisions with general qualifications for the work of the committee or subcommittee. Committee and subcommittee size is not pre-determined, although generally there are no more than 9 members. Time commitments vary with each group, but most committee and subcommittee meetings are held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Association or are conducted via telephone conference call. Generally, a volunteer should not be expected to devote more than 20 hours a year to committee or subcommittee service.
