NGWA Position Statement On Funding of Geologic Mapping
Summary/Background: The National Geologic Mapping Act of 1992 calls for a cooperative mapping program between the USGS and the state geological surveys. There are four components to the mapping program:
- (1) federal mapping by the USGS
- (2) support mapping for technical services by the USGS
- (3) state mapping, a cooperative effort with the states in which federal dollars to the states are to be matched 50-50 by the states and
- (4) education to develop teachers and trained mappers.
The FY93 appropriation for USGS showed considerable underfunding of the state mapping (9 percent of authorization levels) and education (no funding). The Association of American State Geologists has asked for our help to insure increased funding and more balance among the components in the FY94 appropriation.
Recommended Position: NGWA supports increased appropriations for the state mapping and the education components of the National Geologic Mapping At of 1992.
