Instructions for
Contributors

The following suggestions are made to minimize revisions and editorial changes. Uniformity of style and format necessitates attention to detail by authors, even though many points may seem arbitrary. The authors' cooperation in the preparation of manuscripts will permit the publication of greater numbers of papers with the limited funds available.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Topics on any subject pertaining to ground water will be considered for publication. Publication is dependent only upon technical merit; however, manuscripts must be edited to the six page limit, or they will incur page charges.

Manuscripts must be in English, typewritten on one side of page only, double spaced, size 12 font, with 25 mm margins. All units should be SI or metric. Multipart manuscripts are not acceptable and will be returned without review.

The author(s) full name, current employer, and address should appear on the title page (phone, fax and e-mail is encouraged.) Title must be less than 70 characters and spaces. The title page is followed by a one page abstract of less than 250 words. The main body of text should be less than 15,000 words including references. Pages should be numbered consecutively starting with the title page. The first author's last name should appear as a footer on all text pages.

Acknowledgments should be made only for significant contributions by professional associates, permission to publish by employer, access to land or equipment, and financial support. A brief closing statement will usually suffice.

Abbreviations, symbols, units, and Greek letters should be identified the first time they are used. Isotopic data should be expressed following the guidelines set forth in Ground Water, V. 34, No. 3, page 388, 1996 (copies available from the Manuscript Coordinator).

References should be indicated in the text by author(s) name and year. If there are two or more references by the same author in a year the letters a, b, and c after the year can be used. At the end of the paper, references should be listed alphabetically by author(s) name in chronological order. Author names are followed by initials, year of publication, title, and details of publication. The Chicago Manual of Style should be followed on all questions of style. References should not be made to limited access, administrative, or confidential reports nor to commercial products for which a charge will be made for access. Footnotes are unacceptable, except in tables.

Papers with a new computer program must include three copies of the program on a 3.5 in. floppy disk readable by MS-DOS or Windows operating systems. Upon publication the program plus documentation must be made available at nominal cost in a repository from which interested persons can obtain copies from the author, or be placed on a Web site so it can be downloaded by interested individuals. It is highly recommended that authors utilize some of the many online search engines to ensure that all publications relevant to their research are identified.

Tables and Figures

Tables should be typewritten on a separate sheet that includes the table number and caption describing the material; the first author's name should be written on the bottom of each table page.

Figures should be prepared with the column width of the journal (8.25 cm or 3-1/2" for one column; 17.8 cm or 7-3/8" for two columns) in mind and should not require more than a 50% reduction. Figure number and first author's name should be written on each figure with the "top" or "up" indicated. Figure numbers and captions should be typed on a separate page.

Important Guidelines for Creating Art (click here)
It is highly recommended that authors follow these guidelines to ensure that their published figures are of the highest quality possible.

Send to

FIVE (5) copies, including tables and illustrations, should be sent to:

Manuscript Coordinator
601 Dempsey Road
Westerville, OH 43081-8978
USA

In the letter accompanying submission state that you are willing to accept any page charges. Copies of galley proofs, tear sheets of the published article, and a reprint order form will be sent to the corresponding author.

Page Charges

No charge for the first 6 pages. Each additional page exceeding 6 will be billed to the author at a rate of US$250. To estimate length assume approximately 1200 words per page; reduce that if you have a significant number of mathematical equations. Art and tables will be reduced to 8.25 cm or 17.8 cm wide. When submitting the manuscripts for review the author must state that he or she is willing to accept relevant page charges.

Discussion of Papers

Comments pertaining to a manuscript published in Ground Water should be enumerated and are limited to a maximum of 800 words and one figure, or one printed page. The author's response should be enumerated to correspond to the comment and is also limited to 800 words and one figure. It is always wise to have the comments and/or response reviewed by a colleague prior to submission to avoid embarrassment. The format is the same as that required of a regular manuscript.
